Wood Engraving as method for Fine Art Reproduction

The reproductive print served from the Renaissance era till the beginning of the 1900s as the only way many painters could spread their artwork among the public.
They were relying on the ability of the engravers in order to gain recognition and success for their art.

  • Today I pay homage to the craftsmen of the past by reproducing paintings in the form of a
        wood engraving.

                                                           Timothy Cole

Timothy Cole (1852–1931, American wood engraver) was taking commissions from "The Century Magazine" in order to copy masterpieces of European art in musea.
His wood engravings were published from the beginning of the 1890s.

"the advent of new mechanical processes had rendered wood engraving almost a lost art and left practically no demand for the work of such craftsmen..."      Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Cole
